About Me

The Story and Heart of the Scope of Pactice

“I would never recommend a medical career to my kids.”

“I’m a doctor. I don’t know anything about running a business!”

“How am I supposed to build wealth with all these student loans?”

“No one appreciates me.”

I hear these statements all the time from colleagues. We start in the health care field to help people and over time grow miserable due to financial struggles and challenges running our businesses.
Most physicians and dentists enter their profession with large amounts of personal debt and little to no knowledge of how to actually run a practice. “The Scope of Practice” is a place where you can gain the knowledge you need to run your business successfully and master your personal finances.

Are you struggling with personal finances?

Despite relatively steady jobs and high income potential, most health care professionals are not experiencing the joy that comes from being in a personally fulfilling, meaningful career in which they are debt-free with a solid long-term financial investment plan.

Do you feel burned out?

Over 70% of people in the health care industry report experiencing burnout. Nearly half of physicians report plans to seek non-clinical work, and health care professionals are increasingly likely to report getting out of the health care industry before they fully retire.

Are you overwhelmed with the challenges of running a business?

You trained for years to be a physician or dentist, but all that training didn’t prepare you to run a business. Nearly half of physicians report that they would rather give up autonomy and be an employee so they don’t have to struggle through the difficulties of managing a clinical practice.

That’s why I started The Scope of Practice

My goal is to help you gain the knowledge you need to run your business successfully and manage your personal finances with expertise.

Who am I?

brent lacey
My name is Brent Lacey. I’m a gastroenterologist with a passion for financial management and career coaching. As a fellow physician, I understand how overwhelming it can be to step out of clinical training and into a career, and I have seen first hand the lack of education on how to run a practice and manage finances.
Through planning, hard work, and sacrifice, my wife and I were able to pay off all of our student loans before finishing fellowship, and we got a big head start on our retirement savings. Because we were debt-free, we were in a financial position for her to choose to stop working and stay home with our two amazing boys.
It was a tremendous blessing that we were in the position to make that choice. Unfortunately, I discovered that too many of my colleagues were not in the same position.
After fellowship, I felt God calling me to start teaching financial management classes. I created a Financial Discipleship Ministry at my church and developed a personal finance curriculum for my hospital.
Working with colleagues who didn’t benefit from early financial training inspired me to become certified as a Master Financial Coach through Ramsey Solutions. In this new role, my first 300 coaching clients paid off over $1.2 million of debt in just 2 months.
I have spent hundreds of hours coaching and teaching these principles to people at all stages of their career. It has been incredibly rewarding to see friends and colleagues experience the joy of achieving financial independence and success in managing their clinical practice.

Our Objectives

Educate

Educate health care professionals on the nuances of personal finance to help you gain financial freedom and build wealth so you can provide for your family and be incredibly generous to others.

Encourage

Encourage health care professionals with practical and philosophical discussions on the value and honor of the medical profession so you find renewed excitement for your chosen career.

Equip

Equip health care professionals with the tools, resources, and connections you need to succeed in maximizing your wealth building, job satisfaction and career impact.

Why does all of this matter?

Health care professionals who are broke and burned out can’t give their patients, their family, and their community the best of themselves. You took a job in the medical field to help people and to make a difference in someone’s life. You won’t be able to do that if you are beaten down by financial stress or feeling like a commodity to be used up and thrown away. Your patients need you!

No one can make a difference like you.

You owe it to yourself and your patients to be at your best so that you can serve them the best way possible. I want to help you do that.

The Scope of Practice is all about YOU!

What can I do for you?

My goal is to give you confidence in your career, practical tools for building wealth, and inspiration to excel at your chosen profession.

You have an extraordinary calling , an opportunity to serve people when it matters most. You may hold a life in your hands some day. If you’re worried about how you’ll pay for your kids’ college or whether you matter to anyone in your hospital, you may be distracted at the moment that you are needed most. I want to give you the tools and encouragement you need so you can be totally focused on what you love — serving your patients.
